Sidecar for autism

Updated: Feb 4

Benefits of a Scooter Sidecar for Children with Autism

1. Easy Access and Reduced Anxiety

The sidecar is designed to be easy to get in and out of, which is especially important for children with autism who may struggle with balance, coordination, or transitions. Simple access reduces stress, supports independence, and helps children feel more comfortable before the ride even begins.

2. Enhanced Safety by Design

All moving parts, such as the engine and wheels, are fully protected, preventing accidental contact. This is essential for children who may have sensory-seeking behaviours or limited awareness of danger, giving parents and caregivers peace of mind during every ride.

3. Sensory-Friendly Riding Experience

Unlike traditional vehicles, a scooter sidecar offers a more open and predictable environment, allowing children to see their surroundings clearly. This can help reduce sensory overload while still providing gentle sensory input, such as motion and fresh air, in a controlled way.

4. Promotes Inclusion and Shared Experiences

The sidecar allows children with autism to participate in everyday outings, family rides, and community activities that might otherwise be difficult. This shared experience helps children feel included rather than separated, strengthening family bonds.

5. Builds Confidence and Trust

Being securely seated next to a trusted adult helps children develop confidence in new experiences. Over time, regular rides can support emotional regulation, routine building, and trust in both the vehicle and the caregiver.

6. Supports Different Ability Levels

The sidecar accommodates children with varying support needs, whether they require physical assistance, extra supervision, or simply a stable and secure place to sit. Its design makes it adaptable rather than one-size-fits-all.

7. Encourages Outdoor Engagement

Many children with autism benefit from time outdoors. The scooter sidecar provides a safe way to explore the environment, encouraging curiosity, visual engagement, and enjoyment of movement without overwhelming physical demands.

The future

We hope to be able to have more than one bike in the UK over the next few years, as we want to provide a little bit of joy and fun to kids and adults in different areas, the opportunity to explore the world of motorcycles, and the freedoms & sensory feelings it brings.
